Coverage

What does auto insurance cover?

It depends on your state’s requirements, but the highest coverage level includes six types.

Liability

Covers injury or property damage you cause to others in an accident.

Collision

Pays to repair or replace your car after a crash, regardless of fault.

Comprehensive

Covers damage from theft, weather, fire, or hitting an animal.

Medical Payments

Helps cover medical costs for you and your passengers after an accident.

Under/Uninsured Motorist

Protects you if you’re hit by a driver with little or no insurance.

Personal Injury Protection

Covers medical expenses and lost wages regardless of who’s at fault.

Is it required?

Is auto insurance required?

In all but two states, New Hampshire and Virginia, every state requires some proof of financial responsibility. In states that don’t require auto insurance, you still have to prove you can pay for medical and asset damages out of pocket.
